The iconography is of St. John in exile on the island of Patmos because of persecution by the Roman Emperor Domitian. Depicted the evangelist rocky landscapes standing with a pen in hand and gazing into the heaven as he receives from God the Kaleidoscopic apocalyptical vision of numerology and strange beasts that will become the book of revelation. At the feet of the apostle the artist has placed an eagle, the symbol for St. John. Sources: PRGS Archive, Trinity Episcopal Church
